In Istanbul, 47 defendants, including Fırat Sarı and İlker Gönen, who allegedly profited unfairly from newborn babies and caused their deaths through negligent behavior, appeared before a judge for the first time today, with 22 of them in custody. Tension arose during the hearing when the presiding judge requested that a lawyer be removed from the courtroom. As the lawyer was being escorted out, other lawyers protested, asking, "Why is he being removed?"
In Istanbul, 22 of the 47 defendants, including Fırat Sarı and İlker Gönen, who provided unfair profits by transferring newborn babies to the neonatal units of contracted private hospitals and caused their deaths through negligent behavior, appeared before the judge for the first time today. Due to the insufficient capacity of the 21st Heavy Criminal Court Room at Bakırköy Courthouse, the hearing was held in the conference hall, attended by victims and complainants, detained and non-detained defendants, and their lawyers. In the case where 19 private hospitals are mentioned in the indictment, a prison sentence of 17,000 years is requested for the defendants.
HEARING STARTED WITH DELAY
In the case where 47 defendants, 22 of whom are detained, are being tried, 2 defendants had previously been brought into the hall. Then, 20 more defendants were admitted to the courtroom. The hearing began with the identification of the detained defendants. The hearing was expected to start at 11:00 AM but began with a delay around 12:00 PM.
TENSION AMONG LAWYERS IN COURT
The presiding judge warned a lawyer attending the hearing, saying, "You are a spectator; either sit down or leave the courtroom, you are not a party lawyer." A brief tension arose between the lawyers and the presiding judge. According to journalist Emrullah Erdinç, after the tension, the presiding judge requested the lawyer to be removed from the courtroom. When the police attempted to take the lawyer by the arm, the lawyer reacted, saying, "Let go!" As the lawyer was leaving the hall, other lawyers protested the decision, asking, "Why is he being removed?" and objected to the procedure.
