DEVELOPMENTS IN SYRIAOn November 27, opposition groups against Assad, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTŞ), launched an attack on the Syrian army loyal to Bashar Assad, and on December 8, they took control of the capital, Damascus. Thus, the 13-year civil war came to an end, and the Assad regime was toppled. The ousted leader Assad fled the country and sought refuge in Russia.
