An ambulance transporting an elderly patient discharged from the hospital in Amasya caught fire. Upon seeing the smoke, the ambulance driver evacuated the patient and two relatives, also removing the oxygen tanks to prevent them from exploding like bombs. According to the information obtained, a patient transport ambulance was assigned for the elderly patient who was discharged after completing treatment at Amasya University Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin Training and Research Hospital.
ENGULFED IN FLAMES
Hakan Yalçın, who has been an ambulance driver for over 30 years, turned from the tunnel with heavy traffic towards the Kale Yolu area in the evening hours. While in motion, smoke began to rise from the vehicle's engine compartment.
PREVENTED A TRAGEDY
Seeing the smoke, the driver got out and ensured the evacuation of the patient on the stretcher and their relatives first. Despite the rising flames, he also removed two oxygen tanks that were secured in place to mitigate the risk of explosion.
The fire engulfing the ambulance was extinguished by the fire department. The vehicle became unusable. Police teams that arrived at the scene also conducted an investigation of the vehicle.
"A GREAT ACT OF HEROISM"
Hakan Yalçın, who has been an ambulance driver for 31 years, a married man and father of three, said, "Smoke and flames started rising from the front of the vehicle. I got out and tried to intervene. I evacuated the patient and two relatives. I also managed to throw the oxygen tanks out by hanging onto them. If I hadn't removed the oxygen tanks, the situation could have been very dire."
Mehmet Yolcu, who evaluated his colleague's actions as "A great act of heroism," said, "He saved from a great disaster. By removing the oxygen tanks from there, he prevented a catastrophe."
