The body of 52-year-old schizophrenia patient Dilaver Barlas, who was found 43 days after a missing person report in Afyonkarahisar, was determined to have been strangled with a scarf by his brother-in-law's wife. Five people have been arrested in connection with the murder.
On January 15, a male corpse was found among the rocks in the old stone quarry area of the Işıklar town, which is connected to the central district of Afyonkarahisar.
MURDER SUSPECT TEAMS SPRANG INTO ACTION
Due to the shape of the corpse and its location among the rocks, the gendarmerie teams assessed that the incident could be a murder. They identified the deceased as 52-year-old Dilaver Barlas, who had been reported missing on December 3, 2024. The Gendarmerie Crime Investigation Team (JASAT) determined that Barlas had gone to the house of his brother-in-law S.H., with whom he had a feud, after drinking alcohol with three friends around 10:00 PM on November 27, 2024.
IT WAS DETERMINED THAT HE WAS A REPORTED SCHIZOPHRENIC PATIENT
In the investigation, it was found that Barlas was a reported schizophrenic patient, that he was in the process of divorce from his wife T.B., and that he had been arrested for stabbing his wife after an argument in July 2024. The teams discovered that Barlas's wife T.B. had moved to a rented house in the city center with their two children, taking her belongings, and that her brother S.H. had helped her. It was also found that Barlas had been released in November 2024 to be tried without detention due to his illness, and that he had continuously threatened his wife and her brother S.H. afterwards.
650 HOURS OF CAMERA FOOTAGE REVIEWED
The JASAT teams, who reviewed approximately 650 hours of camera footage, found that Barlas was at his home in Işıklar town with his children during the daytime on November 27, 2024. After seeing his children off around 6:00 PM, he went to the house of his friends I.E., I.E., and S.E., who lived in the Sülümenli town. After drinking alcohol for a while there, he asked them to drop him off at a pub in Işıklar town, where he drank for a while before leaving.
STRANGLED WITH A SCARF
It was determined that Dilaver Barlas went to the house of his brother-in-law S.H. and his wife N.H., with whom he had a feud, on the same day, and wanted to enter. He forcibly entered and sat on the couch in the living room, stating to those in the room, "You broke up my marriage, you caused our divorce, I will burn you all, I will kill you." Barlas attempted to light a cigarette, and despite N.H. saying there were people with heart conditions in the house, he lit his cigarette. When N.H. lunged to take the cigarette and lighter from him, Barlas elbowed her in the stomach, after which N.H. strangled him with a scarf that she had taken off her head. It was found that N.H.'s brother Y.S. came to the house, and that Y.S., S.H., and B.B. wrapped the body in a sack and loaded it onto an agricultural vehicle known as a "patpat" in the courtyard of the house, then left it near the old stone quarry.
5 OUT OF 16 SUSPECTS ARRESTED
Of the 16 suspects taken into custody regarding the incident, 8 were released after their statements. Among the suspects sent to the courthouse, 3 were released under judicial control, while S.H., his wife N.H., İ.K., B.B., and Y.S. were arrested.
