The cottony layer observed in Lake Sapanca in Sakarya was explained to be green algae formed due to the increase in temperature. Seyit Sakallıoğlu, General Manager of Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration, stated that no findings that would negatively affect drinking water quality were found in the analyses conducted.
It was determined that the cotton-like layer noticed by divers in Lake Sapanca is green algae due to the increase in temperature. SASKİ stated that there is no risk in terms of drinking water quality and that necessary measures have been taken.
Members of the Pirate Divers Association, who conducted a dive in Lake Sapanca, one of the drinking water sources of Sakarya and Kocaeli, encountered a cotton-like formation at the lake bottom off the coast of Aşağıdereköy Neighborhood in Serdivan district. After the images were shared on social media, technical teams from Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality took samples from the cotton-like structure at the bottom. The samples were sent to the laboratory for analysis.
"WE ARE CLOSELY MONITORING THE ALGAE FORMATION"
SASKİ General Manager Seyit Sakallıoğlu made a statement regarding the algae formation in Lake Sapanca. Stating that the samples taken from the lake were sent to Istanbul University on the same day, Sakallıoğlu said that analyses conducted by the institution and examinations in the university laboratory determined that the formation is a type of green algae that had also been observed in previous years due to the increase in temperature. Sakallıoğlu said, "In its current state, this formation does not pose any risk to water health." Stating that 17 separate samples were taken from different points of Lake Sapanca, Sakallıoğlu said, "No findings that could negatively affect drinking water quality were found in the examinations. We are closely monitoring the algae formation and initiating necessary work to prevent its proliferation."
