An unexpected incident occurred at the U.S. Chess Championship. 17-year-old chess star Christopher Yoo was arrested for his involvement in a violent incident.
The incident unfolded after his match against defending champion Fabiano Caruana. Yoo, who could only score one point in his first five matches, lost control after being defeated by Caruana in his last match. Footage broadcast online showed him crumpling the score sheet and then angrily leaving the video room. During this time, he punched a 24-year-old female camera operator in the back.
The St. Louis Chess Club acted immediately. They expelled Yoo from the tournament for seriously violating the code of conduct and banned him from the facility. The police were called, and the young athlete was taken into custody on charges of fourth-degree assault. Yoo, who was later released into the custody of his parents, will have his case evaluated under the juvenile justice system.
In a statement following the incident, Yoo expressed deep remorse. He stated that he could not control his anger due to the frustration of the defeat, but acknowledged that this was certainly not an excuse. He sent an apology letter to the camera operator both personally and through the Executive Director.
His family also issued a public apology. They stated that their son had never experienced such an incident before and announced that he would receive therapy to protect his mental health.
Born in 2006, Yoo was recognized as a bright talent. He had earned the title of the youngest International Chess Master in the U.S. in 2019. All of his results in the tournament will be annulled, and his opponents will receive byes.
The St. Louis Chess Club emphasized that they take player behavior seriously and will take all necessary measures to ensure a safe environment. The incident is currently under investigation by both the club and the federation.
