In a statement made by the Turkish Academy, located in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, it was reported that the 3rd meeting of the Joint Turkic Alphabet Commission of the Turkic World was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on September 9-11, in collaboration with the Turkish Academy and the Turkish Language Institution. The statement indicated that the meeting, attended by members of the Joint Turkic Alphabet Commission from member countries of the Turkic World, was successfully concluded, stating that the main aim of the meeting was to finalize the work on the common alphabet project for Turkic languages by utilizing the knowledge gained in this field and the 2-year experience of the commission. CONSENSUS REACHED ON THE PROPOSAL OF A COMMON TURKIC ALPHABET CONSISTING OF 34 LETTERSThe statement emphasized that during the meeting, the Latin-based Common Turkic Alphabet project, which was initially proposed by scientists in 1991, was thoroughly reviewed and the commission members made necessary observations regarding the aspects that need to be developed in this alphabet project. It was stated that as a result of this dedicated work, a consensus was reached on the proposal of a Common Turkic Alphabet consisting of 34 letters. Each letter in the proposed alphabet represents different phonemes found in Turkic languages. The statement highlighted the historical significance of the successful conclusion of the meeting, stating that the development of the Common Turkic Alphabet promotes mutual understanding and cooperation among Turkic peoples while also preserving their linguistic heritage.
