On February 6, 2023, in Adana, the contractor Hasan Alpargün of the apartment where 96 people lost their lives in the earthquake was sentenced to 62 life sentences and 865 years in prison.

During the hearing at the Adana 12th High Criminal Court, the detained defendant Hasan Alpargün, the contractor of the Alpargün Apartment, participated via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from prison. Lawyers and complainants were present in the courtroom. The public prosecutor, reiterating his opinion on the merits of the case, suggested that Hasan Alpargün be punished and that his detention status be continued, taking into account all the evidence collected in the file.

"I DID NOT USE ANY DEFICIENT MATERIAL IN THE CONSTRUCTION"

Recalling the allegations against him, Alpargün, who was asked to defend himself, claimed that he conducted a ground survey before constructing the building, stating, "I built an apartment in accordance with the laws. I did not use any deficient materials in the construction. I constructed the building in accordance with the 1975 Earthquake Regulation. The project is complete and flawless. I obtained the occupancy permit for the building. There was no damage to the building during the Ceyhan earthquake in 1998. The building has proven itself in this regard. I have no responsibility left. Major renovations have been made in the building. There have been physical interventions to the load-bearing elements and columns. The earthquake's acceleration force destroyed the building. I surrendered to the police myself after the incident. I have serious health problems. I am a cancer patient. I had angioplasty, I am 73 years old. I have been detained for a long time. I request my release and acquittal."

DECISION MADE TO CONTINUE THE CURRENT STATUS

The complainants participating in the case stated that they were complaining against the defendant and requested the punishment of Alpargün. The complainants' lawyers requested that the court consider the 46-page second expert report prepared by a 6-member committee consisting of faculty members from Konya Technical University and that the prosecutor change their opinion in this direction regarding the punishment of the defendant Alpargün for the crime of "intentional killing." The court panel decided to continue the current status of Hasan Alpargün, who was sentenced to 62 life sentences and 865 years in prison for "causing the death and injury of multiple people with intent."
