A 37-year-old mother of four, Lindsey Owen, was found dead in the children's ward where her sick child was being treated in England.
The incident occurred last May. Nurses found Owen motionless while sleeping next to her child in a private room during the child's routine check-up.
As a result of the investigation, it was determined that Owen's death was caused by drug use. The staff on duty in the ward had three bottles of methadone for Owen, who was trying to quit drugs. Security cameras showed that Owen, who lived in Stoke-on-Trent, left the hospital a day before her death. Authorities believe that Owen used drugs during this time.
Forensic Expert Dr. Brett Lockyer explained the cause of death as follows: "Various drugs such as heroin, methadone, gabapentin, mirtazapine, codeine, and diazepam were detected in her body. The combined effect of these drugs stopped her respiratory system. Owen fell into a deep sleep and passed away in her sleep. She did not suffer."
Owen's sister, Claudia Mooney, started a fundraising campaign for funeral expenses and raised over £2,000. In an emotional message she wrote for her sister, Mooney said:
"My sister Lindsey was a beautiful person inside and out. She left behind four beautiful children. They were deeply shaken by this sudden loss. Lindsey was my hero, the most protective sister. She was always there for me from my infancy to adulthood, always defending me. She would do anything for her loved ones, even giving her last money to those in need. She did not deserve to leave us so early."
This tragic event once again highlighted the devastating consequences of drug addiction.
