A father of five children with dementia died after accidentally pouring laundry detergent into his cornflakes instead of milk. After realizing the situation, Tom McDonald's daughter rushed him to St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin. His daughter Aisling O'Grady said, "It happened so fast - he was completely fine and then suddenly he was gone." 92-year-old Tom was diagnosed with dementia five years ago and his condition had worsened in the months leading up to his death. His daughter Ailbhe said that he struggled with day-night confusion and would eat at odd hours. On the night of the incident, Ailbhe noticed the purple detergent in her father's cornflake bowl. Tom's condition deteriorated at the hospital and he passed away at 08:50. An autopsy confirmed that Tom died from lung inflammation caused by ingesting the detergent. Doctor John stated that Tom's dementia and heart disease also contributed to his death, but it would not have been likely for him to die at that time if he hadn't ingested the detergent. A forensic expert ruled it as an accidental death and said that he would bring this unusual case to the attention of the authorities. He also added that he had never encountered such a death before.
