The electricity price increase was deemed defective! Those who object are being refunded with interest.

The increase in electricity consumption exceeding 5,000 kilowatt-hours at the beginning of the year was deemed 'defective' by the Consumer Arbitration Board because consumers were not notified in a timely manner. Consumers will be able to reclaim the excess amount they paid after the price increase, along with interest, through individual applications.

CHP Deputy Chairman Deniz Yavuzyılmaz announced on his social media account that the electricity price increase, which came into effect at the beginning of 2025, was deemed "defective" by the Consumer Arbitration Board. Yavuzyılmaz stated that, based on a citizen's application, it was ruled that the difference of 2,305 TL in the price increase would be refunded along with legal interest.

ELECTRICITY PRICE INCREASE DEEMED DEFECTIVE

In Yavuzyılmaz's post, he stated, "Good news for all our citizens! Our struggle has yielded results. We had called for objections to the massive increase in electricity bills for residences made by the AK Party starting from February 1, 2025. We shared a sample objection petition with the public. Result: The massive electricity bill increase by the AK Party was deemed defective by the Consumer Arbitration Board! It was decided that the defective increase amount would be refunded to the applicant citizen along with interest. The way to cancel exorbitant bill increases has been opened through individual applications.

"THE INCREASE NOTIFICATION WAS MADE LATE"

What happened? In 2024, a 96% increase was applied to the bills of residential subscribers exceeding 5,000 kWh of electricity usage starting from 2025. However, the information regarding which consumption amounts would be subject to increases for residences was announced to the public on November 7, 2024. In other words, the notification was made too late for citizens to take precautions regarding their electricity consumption amounts. The AK Party knowingly and willingly trapped citizens in a price increase!

"IT WILL BE REFUNDED WITH LEGAL INTEREST"

We objected to this robbery! With the petition we shared, prepared by the Chamber of Electrical Engineers; on March 22, 2025, one of our citizens made an objection application regarding the issue in Mersin. Subsequently, the Consumer Arbitration Board made its decision: It found the electricity price increase made by the AK Party to be defective! It was decided that the defective increase amount of 2,305 TL would be refunded to the citizen along with legal interest. I call on all citizens who have been harmed by the increase! You can individually apply to the Consumer Arbitration Board with the sample petition I shared here and your high electricity bills. This way, you can receive a refund for the unjustly collected bill amounts. Let's seek our rights, let's exercise our right to objection!"

WHAT HAPPENED?

In January, the decision to amend Articles 5 and 6 of the Regulation on the Source Supply Tariff by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) was published in the Official Gazette. With this decision, subsidies for residences and workplaces with an annual consumption exceeding 5,000 kilowatt-hours were removed. This was reflected as an increase in bills.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that subsidized prices would be removed for residential subscribers with high electricity consumption and that these subscribers would pay for electricity based on actual costs starting from February. 1.2 million residential subscribers were affected by the regulation. It is stated that the bills of subscribers exceeding the limit could double due to the regulation.
