(ANKARA) - As the new year approaches, the upcoming price increases have become a topic of curiosity. The price of bread, which enters almost every household, is expected to increase by 3.5 lira to 13.5 lira in Ankara as of January 1, 2025.
With little time left until the new year, the eyes of tradesmen and citizens are turned towards the price hikes. While it is reported that some bakeries in a few areas of Istanbul have started selling bread for 12.5 lira instead of the officially announced 10 lira, it is expected that the price of 200 grams of bread in Ankara will rise from 10 lira to 13.5 lira starting January 1.
Citizens speaking to ANKA News Agency reacted to the expected price increase, while some tradesmen called for measures against opportunists.
A baker in Ankara stated, "Everyone is an opportunist. The flour we bought for 700 lira is now 1,000 lira, and the oil we bought for 500 lira has become 1,500 lira. But I don't think the price of bread will increase that much. What I want from the government is to put an end to these opportunists as soon as possible. They need to take measures against them."
"The public reacts when the price of bread increases, but it doesn't last long"
Tradesman Muhammed Oğuz said, "Of course, the public reacts when the price of bread increases, but it doesn't last long. Given the situation, we continue our sales in the same way within a month or two."
A retired citizen asked, "If they increase the price of our bread, what else will we eat? I pay rent, water bills, and electricity bills. What will we eat? Our pension is halved. Should I spend my salary on rent, electricity, and water, or buy bread for 13.5 lira?"
"If the price increases, we will go and buy stale bread"
Retired Mehmet Güzel stated, "We buy four loaves of bread a day. If the price increases, we will go and buy stale bread. There is no other way. They called it the 'retirement year,' but it has become a year of misery for us."
