Following the decision of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission to visit İmralı, the first statement from the DEM Party was released. The statement said, "The Commission's visit to İmralı will open the door to a new era in Turkey; the politics of fear will be replaced by the hope and trust of living together."
The National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission, which came together with the Imralı agenda, has made a decision. A decision was made to go to Imralı during the 18th meeting of the Terror-Free Turkey Commission, which was held in a closed session.
Following the decision, the first statement came from the DEM Party. In a statement signed by DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, it was emphasized that the decision would open the door to a new era.
The statement included the following expressions: "We welcome the decision made today by the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission to go to Imralı as the most concrete expression of Turkey's democratic maturity and peace will."
The upcoming visit to Imralı will be a historic step towards permanently ending the pains experienced for decades and establishing social reconciliation. The dialogue ground to be established in Imralı and the transparent communication channels to be developed present a unique opportunity window for the resolution of the Kurdish issue and the democratization of Turkey.
The Commission's visit to Imralı will open the door to a new era in Turkey; the politics of fear will be replaced by the hope and security of living together. This meeting will reinforce the transparency and sincerity of the process and strengthen the participation of all segments of society in the construction of peace.
We firmly believe that the meetings with Mr. Öcalan will play a decisive role in the healthy and secure progress of the process. We wholeheartedly congratulate the Commission members who will carry out this visit and express our gratitude to all political parties that play a constructive role in the Commission's work and to the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Numan Kurtulmuş.
We also thank the President of the Republic, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Chairman of the MHP, Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, and our coalition parties EMEP and TİP for the establishment of the Commission, for carrying out their work in tranquility, for recognizing the people's demand for peace, and for courageously expressing the will to go to Imralı.
The essential role of politics is to consider the common interest of the country and the peoples and to produce solutions. The decision made today is a sign of such responsibility. However, we must express our sadness at the distant approaches of some political circles to this historic step. Courage and foresight in peace processes always deserve appreciation. Hesitations and avoidances wound the social conscience. The requirement of democratic politics is to stand side by side in decisions to be made about the common future of the peoples in such a historical process, to walk shoulder to shoulder.
On this occasion, we once again remind everyone of their historical responsibility in strengthening the will for peace. The bold steps we take today will bring a future within the law of brotherhood. We hope that this visit will contribute to the common future of 86 million, our democratic free unity, equal citizenship, and lasting peace. Building peace is a common duty and responsibility for all of us. Although our political views may differ, we call on everyone who has a say in the future of this country to come together on the common ground of solution and peace for the construction of our common future and lasting peace.
