After the terrorist organization PKK's decision to dissolve and lay down arms, a new phase has begun. Legal steps regarding the process of a Turkey without terrorism are one of the most critical topics of this process. AK Party Istanbul Deputy and Member of the Parliamentary Interior Affairs Commission Azmi Ekinci made critical statements regarding the process.
Ekinci, regarding the imprisonment of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, stated, "In today's context, it would not be right to treat Demirtaş as guilty since the conditions under which he was convicted have been eliminated."
"WHOEVER STANDS AGAINST THE WIND WILL PERISH"
Azmi Ekinci made statements to Rudaw regarding the PKK's decision to dissolve and lay down arms. Ekinci said, "The founder of this organization is Öcalan. The founder and leader made a call. He stated that the PKK has fulfilled its purpose, that it has fallen into repetition since the 90s, and that it has become meaningless with an approach resembling a blood feud. Therefore, he declared that it should dissolve itself. In other words, from Abdullah Öcalan's perspective, this organization has ended by the leader who is its founder. After Abdullah Öcalan's statement, I do not think that the PKK and its components will object to this, but even if they do, at this point, these individuals will become marginal and are doomed to fade away and will not be successful. The toothpaste is out of the tube. From now on, whoever stands against this, whoever stands against this wind will perish."
"IT WOULD NOT BE RIGHT TO STILL TREAT DEMİRTAŞ AS GUILTY"
Ekinci responded to the question, "Is it possible for figures like Salahattin Demirtaş to return to political life and for their imprisonment to end in the near future?" by saying, "Now, blood feuds are experienced, then we sit at the peace table and make peace. The requirements of that peace will be fulfilled. There is a similar situation here as well. The organization has now decided to lay down arms and dissolve itself. This decision was made to ensure a Turkey without terrorism and to build a democratic society. After this decision, the blood feud is over. From now on, the requirements of this will be fulfilled. As I said, it is a matter of a new constitution, that is, the work that will be done at the center of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Subsequently, when certain changes are made to the constitution, some things that were previously considered crimes will no longer be crimes. In other words, when a person abandons their mistake, there is no point in treating them as if they are still in that mistake."
"HE MAY RETURN TO POLITICS"
This has never happened anywhere in this world, nor will it. This is something that foolish and irrational people would do. What crimes did Selahattin Demirtaş receive sentences for? In today's context, since the conditions of that day have been eliminated, it would not be right to still treat Selahattin Demirtaş as guilty. Moreover, he has supported the process from the beginning to the end and has stated this repeatedly. I believe he is one of the individuals who will contribute to this process in Turkish politics. He may return to politics and can also be an actor in politics, just like Demirtaş and similar individuals."
