On December 8, Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia leaving his country to the opposition, stated in a written statement days later, "I did not consider leaving the country or resigning until December 8."

Following this development, the first official statement from the Assad front came. According to the statement published in the form of a letter, Assad did not leave Syria in a planned manner and continued to fulfill his presidential duties until December 8.

Assad stated that he left Damascus on the morning of Sunday, December 8, when the opposition was approaching Damascus, and mentioned that he was evacuated to Russia from the Hmeymim base due to drone attacks in the evening hours.
