He wore the jersey of the Georgian National Football Team from 1992 to 2002. In 2016, Kavelashvili entered parliament as a member of the Georgian Dream Party. He was also elected as a member of parliament from the same party in 2020, and on June 28, 2022, he left the Georgian Dream Party and, along with other members of parliament, founded the People's Power Party.
