Greece's Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis admitted that they support Israel, which is accused of committing genocide in Gaza, and that they are friends and allies. Georgiadis stated on social media that many accounts have been protesting Greece's decision not to withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel's participation for days, claiming that the withdrawal decisions made by some countries stem from the ideological left hegemony in those countries.
The Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, stated in his post, "We are staying in Eurovision and supporting Israel because Israel is our friend and ally." In response to a social media user who commented, "The International Amnesty Organization's determination that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and the International Court of Justice's decision that there is convincing evidence of genocide in Gaza, and that the entire international community must take steps to prevent this," Georgiadis argued that these were insignificant. Georgiadis used the expression, "Irrelevant structures dominated by leftist views. No one should pay any attention to them."
ANOTHER MINISTER SUPPORTED THIS OUTBURST
Participating in the debate via X account, Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris also supported Georgiadis, stating, "The case law of many European courts and international courts, as well as the decisions of European organizations and international organizations, have been influenced by the hegemony of leftist ideology for years." Plevris claimed that these institutions oppose the establishment of migrant camps outside the European Union (EU), the sending of asylum seekers to safe third countries, and the protection of borders, adding, "In Israel's fight against terrorism, we have seen that these organizations are overly sensitive towards the perpetrators rather than the victims of terrorists."
REACTIONS FROM THE LEFT OPPOSITION
Dimitris Mancos, the Foreign Policy Representative of the main opposition party in Greece, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), stated in a written statement, "International courts and international justice are integral parts of the international order based on binding rules for the countries that have accepted their implementation. Our country is among these countries." The statement indicated that the social media posts of Plevris and Georgiadis were unacceptable, arguing that such expressions questioned Greece's participation in the international system regarding the implementation and interpretation of international law.
In a written statement from the opposition party Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), it was noted, "The Minister of Health has described the International Court of Justice, which our country recognizes and where our international disputes can be addressed, as an 'irrelevant structure dominated by leftist views.' The Minister of Migration and Asylum claims that European courts and organizations operate in a West and Europe-hostile manner on issues such as migration. The relativization of international treaties, the segregation of international organizations, and the questioning of our country's fundamental decisions are a Greek version of the far-right strategy." The statement accused Plevris and Georgiadis of far-right extremism.
In a written statement from the opposition party New Left, the rhetoric of Georgiadis and Plevris was characterized as far-right, with the interpretation that both ministers favor a world constructed according to the desires of the powerful.
