The wife of 27-year-old police officer Şeyda Yılmaz, who was martyred in a gun attack in Ümraniye, Istanbul, Semih Yılmaz, recounted that he learned about the attack through a radio announcement.
Condolence visits continue at the family home of Şeyda Yılmaz, who was martyred when Yunus Emre Geçti (19), who was detained for motorcycle theft at the Dudullu Police Station and had 26 separate criminal records, fired a weapon during the scuffle that ensued after he escaped from the police station.
Semih Yılmaz, the police officer husband of martyr Şeyda Yılmaz, who accepted condolences, told AA reporter that he has been going through a difficult process since the day of the incident. Expressing his deep sadness, Yılmaz said, "We are at a point where words fail. The things I have experienced and we have experienced since I received the first news are very difficult. The whole country supported us by calling and sending messages. Everyone said they were praying and crying. May the homeland be blessed."
"BOILING WATER WAS POURED OVER MY HEAD"
Yılmaz stated that he was on duty the day of the incident, saying, "We were working the same shift. I left home at 5:15 PM. If I remember correctly, I heard the radio voice around 10:00 or 11:30 PM. They said, 'A police officer at Dudullu Police Station has been injured,' so I immediately called my wife. She didn't answer, and I was very worried. I told my fellow officers there that I couldn't stay here, to take me. While we were on the way, my fellow officer said, 'Brother, one of the injured is your wife.' When I heard that, boiling water was poured over my head. I didn't know what to do."
"SHE REALLY WANTED TO BE A MARTYR"
After receiving the news, Semih Yılmaz recounted that they immediately went to the hospital, saying, "My other fellow officers were always by my side at the hospital. Our superiors came. We prayed a lot. She really wanted to be a martyr. We had talked among ourselves a few times. I said, 'Let me be the first, then you can be.' That’s how I received the news..."
"LIKE THE WHOLE COUNTRY, I AM VERY ANGRY TOO"
Yılmaz expressed his belief that the state would do what is necessary regarding the suspect, stating, "That issue is a different dimension for me; I can't say much about it. Like the whole country, I am very angry too. There may be many things to say, but I have full faith that our state will do what is necessary. I wish that no other Şeyda's become martyrs, and that no other mothers, fathers, spouses, or children suffer. I wish for this from our state. I demand that more attention be paid against these crime machines. As I said, I have suffered; may no other families suffer."
