A new measure is being implemented for passenger and driver safety in taxis. According to the regulation published in the Official Gazette last year, which will come into effect on March 1, 2025, it will be mandatory to install cameras in all taxis.
The Ministry of Interior announced that as of March 1, there will be a mandatory requirement for cameras in all taxis across the country. Taxis that do not comply with the application, which will affect approximately 120,000 taxis, will not be able to pass their vehicle inspections, and their licenses will be revoked.
The obligation to install cameras in taxis was announced in the Official Gazette published on November 29, 2024. According to the application, which marks March 1, 2025, as the effective date, a change was foreseen in the Highway Traffic Regulation. With this change, it became mandatory to install internal cameras in 120 vehicles to record any negative incidents that may occur in taxis.
LICENSES AND INSPECTIONS WILL BE REVOKED
The obligation will start on March 1, 2025. Taxis that do not have cameras installed by this date will face sanctions. The primary sanctions include inspection and license revocation. Taxis without cameras will not be able to obtain a pass certificate from vehicle inspection stations. Therefore, since they will all be considered uninspected, they may be banned from traffic. Another sanction issue is the revocation of the license. The licenses of taxis that do not install cameras may also be revoked.
CAMERAS AIM FOR COMPLETE SECURITY
The cameras to be installed in 120,000 taxis will show both the interior of the vehicle and the route to be taken. The recorded images will be kept on file for at least one month. This way, when needed for retrospective investigations, the taxi's internal and external cameras can be examined.
