A 18-year-old novice Japanese soldier killed two fellow soldiers he argued with at a shooting range at a Japanese military base. Police reported that the suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the scene in Gifu prefecture in central Japan. Police said the suspect fired a rifle at three other soldiers during a shooting exercise at the Hino Kihon shooting range. Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force, the country's army, confirmed that two of the injured soldiers later died in the hospital. An anonymous military official, citing protocol, said it was believed that a large number of people were participating in the training at the time of the incident, but details were still being investigated. Japan was known for its strict gun control laws and security, but in recent years, there have been high-profile incidents of violence, including stabbings and arson attacks at metro stations, and there is growing concern about homemade weapons and explosives.
