WHY IS SELAHATTİN DEMİRTAŞ IN CUSTODY?

In 2016, Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, and 9 HDP members of parliament were detained on charges such as "establishing an organization for the purpose of committing a crime," "being a member of a terrorist organization," "being a member of an armed terrorist organization," and "committing crimes on behalf of the organization." Demirtaş was later arrested and sent to Edirne F-Type Prison. In 2017, he received an additional 5-month prison sentence from the Doğubayazıt 2nd Criminal Court for "insulting the Turkish nation, the Republic of Turkey, and the institutions and organs of the state." In 2018, he was sentenced to an additional 4 years and 8 months for "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" during a trial related to a speech he made at a Nevruz celebration by the Istanbul 26th Heavy Criminal Court. Although a release decision was made in the main case, he was not released due to other cases against him.

Finally, on May 16, 2024, a verdict was announced in a case involving a total of 108 people, including 18 in custody, related to the protests and violent events that occurred in 2014, known to the public as 'Kobani' or the '6-8 October events.' Selahattin Demirtaş, one of the former co-chairs of the HDP, was sentenced to 42 years in prison for various offenses.
