On the morning of December 19, a horror unfolded in the Yeşilkent neighborhood of the Avcılar district in Istanbul. Şaban Kement (60) fled after throwing acid on the face of Şengül Selük (44) when she refused his proposal, which he had been trying to discuss for about 6 months.
HE LOST BOTH OF HIS EYES
Upon the notification of the surrounding people, police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Medical teams took Selük, who was severely injured, to the hospital. It was learned that Şengül Selük, who was treated at Çam and Sakura City Hospital, suffered vision loss in both eyes. Police teams initiated a search to capture the suspect.
“YOU ARE AS OLD AS MY FATHER” SHE REJECTED HIM SAYING
Avcılar Police Department teams began examining the security camera footage in the area. After identifying the suspect, a search was initiated to capture him. The attacker was arrested and sent to prison after being caught in Düzce on February 26. In her statement, Şengül Selük said that she did not know Şaban Kement, that he had been following her for about 6 months, and that she rejected his proposal by saying, “You are as old as my father, leave me alone.”
“WE AWOKE TO HER CRY”
Neighborhood resident Bektaş Yıldırım said, “We were going to work at that time. I heard her voice. When I went out to the balcony, she was holding onto the wires, screaming. She was crying out, ‘Someone threw something in my eye, my eye is burning.’ Then I went downstairs. A few neighbors had also come. We saw she was in a terrible state. After that, they called the police and the ambulance. I went to work. They took her to the hospital, that’s all we know. We don’t know who threw it, we didn’t see. We only woke up to her cry after the incident. The police entered the houses with cameras and looked at the footage,” he said.
“HE HID AND THREW ACID ON HER FACE”
Emine Koşar, who lives in the adjacent building, said, “My child was going to work with my husband. But my husband had gone ahead. He followed from behind. The girl was very good. She would go to work and come back. That man came and hid there and then threw it on her face. May God hold him accountable, what can I say?”
Neighborhood resident Ramazan Durgut explained that Şengül Selük, who worked at a textile company in Beylikdüzü, had not only burned her face but her entire body, and that neighbors took her to Esenyurt State Hospital by car.
