HE CONTRACTED POLIO AT 6 MONTHS OLD

58-year-old Emel Örün, who was born in Germany, contracted polio when she was just 6 months old. Örün, who has a 63% disability and struggles with her left leg, started living in Istanbul after completing her education and entered the workforce there. A mother of one who worked as a beauty expert for many years, Örün began living alone after separating from her husband and settled in Antalya 20 years ago. In addition to the disability benefits she receives, Emel Örün tries to make a living by making and selling flower crowns. Four years ago, she suffered fractures in her left leg due to a traffic accident and became confined to a wheelchair. Due to her low income, she continued to live by renting a shop instead of a house. The determined woman, who cannot work, received assistance from the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and nearby neighbors in the form of furniture and white goods. Örün converted the shop she rented with her savings and donations into a home.

SHE WILL BE EVICTED IN 10 DAYS

Emel Örün, who stated that she has been living in the same place for about 8 years, recently appealed against the eviction decision due to unpaid rent for the shop. Örün claimed that she sent part of the unpaid rent via promissory note and cash, and some parts through the bank, and applied to a higher court through her lawyer. However, the court upheld the eviction decision. Örün, who stated that she was given a 10-day notice and would be leaving her home, began to pack her belongings.

"I WANT A HOME"

Örün, who expressed that she is extremely sad about the eviction, said: "I am incredibly sad. I have been in such a difficult situation that I have been suffering from this sadness and stress for about a year. I have been living here under difficult conditions as a disabled person for years. I also want to live in a normal, beautiful house. I had to live here out of desperation, and now I am being evicted. We are entering a new year. It is very sad to be homeless and to stay on the street. I don't know what to say. I also want to have a home. I want to live like healthy, normal people; don't we have the right to live like this just because we are disabled? It is not a bearable situation. I know there are people in difficult situations like me. I kindly ask for support. In the new year, I hope to have a living environment where I can live healthily like you."

"WE SAID IT WAS AGAINST THE NATURAL FLOW OF LIFE"

Örün's lawyer, Mümtaz Sami Özok, stated that his client rented the place in 2016 and claimed that the person who rented it as a real estate agent did not write an IBAN in the contract and received the payment in cash, saying, "Recently, due to rent increases, the rent here has increased fourfold. When my client said she could not pay this, they requested eviction through her lawyer with a claim for five years of back rent. We objected to this, stating that it was received in cash and no receipt was given. We said that not paying rent for five years and then applying for eviction is against the natural flow of life. If the rent had not been paid in five years, eviction would have been pursued; why is it being pursued now? Unfortunately, we could not explain this."
