WHAT IS BLUETONGUE DISEASE?Bluetongue virus (BTV), also known as bluetongue virus, is a viral infection that can occur in ruminant large and small animals. Although sheep are the most severely affected, bluetongue disease affects all ruminant species, including goats, cattle, camels, deer, and African antelopes, and can be transmitted by insects, primarily biting midges. Healthy-looking cattle and goats can carry high levels of the virus and can provide additional sources of infection. Bluetongue disease does not spread to humans through contact with sick animals or through the milk or wool of these animals.
