The Netherlands has banned the adoption of Scottish Fold and Sphynx cats. The ban will come into effect in 2026.

The Netherlands has decided to ban the adoption of hairless cats and cats with folded ears. The law will come into effect on January 1, 2026.

The Scottish Fold breed is more prone to joint and cartilage problems due to a genetic mutation that causes its ears to fold. These cats experience pain due to cartilage growth in their ears, legs, and tails. Sphynx cats, which are hairless, are also more susceptible to diseases and can sense their environment less due to the lack of fur and whiskers on their bodies. Additionally, their hairless nature makes them extremely sensitive to skin problems and cold weather.

THE BAN WILL APPLY TO NEW ADOPTIONS

The ban will only apply to new adoptions. Those who already own such breeds will be able to keep their cats. However, they will be required to have their cats microchipped to document that they were adopted previously. Furthermore, these cats will also be prohibited from participating in cat competitions and shows.
