In the case known to the public as the 'Newborn Gang' case, where it is alleged that they caused the deaths of baby patients by transferring them to private hospitals they had previously agreed upon and gained unjust profits, 7 out of the 13 detained defendants, including doctor Fırat Sarı, appeared before the judge. During the hearing, while reading the documents added to the case file, it was stated that two cases separated from the file were merged with the main case, thus increasing the number of defendants to 61.
In Istanbul, the number of defendants in the case against the Newborn Gang, which provided unfair profits by transferring babies to hospitals they had agreements with and caused their deaths through negligent behavior, has increased to 61 with the addition of defendants whose case files were separate to the main case.
A recent indictment was prepared regarding the second wave operation against the Newborn Gang. The number of defendants had risen to 57 with the indictment prepared against individuals identified as acting together with the alleged gang leader Fırat Sarı, which was merged with the main case file. While the trial was ongoing, on February 11, 2025, the defendant İlker Gönen, whose name appeared in the indictment as an 'organization manager', committed suicide in the prison where he was held.
7 OUT OF 13 DEFENDANTS APPEARED BEFORE THE JUDGE
Today, in the courtroom of the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court, 7 out of 13 detained defendants, including the doctor Fırat Sarı, who is alleged to be the leader of the organized crime group, appeared before the judge. Some defendants who were not in custody, complainants, and lawyers for the parties were present at the hearing. Some detained and non-detained defendants participated in the hearing via the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS). The hearing began around 11:00 with identity verification and the defendants' statements.
THE NUMBER OF DEFENDANTS HAS REACHED 61
During the hearing, while reading the documents added to the case file, it was learned that two cases that were separate from the file were merged with the main case, thus increasing the number of defendants to 61. On the other hand, an indictment was prepared against Dursun Eryılmaz, Hasan Basri Gök, Hilda Keykubad, İbrahim Oktay, Zeki Ötünç, Serenay Şenkalaycı, and Songül Kaloğlu for the crime of 'intentional killing through negligent behavior'. Additionally, an indictment was prepared against Şeyhmuş Çelik for 'forgery of official documents', against Şenay Çalıkoğlu for 'aiding in the forgery of official documents', and against Cem Türker Öztürk for 'qualified fraud', which was also merged with this case file.
