The Lüneburg Police Department stated that the number of deaths in the attack has increased to 6, reporting that 5 people—4 women and 1 man—died at the scene, and 1 person died in the hospital to which they were taken.
3 PEOPLE ARE IN CUSTODY
The Lüneburg Police Department, noting that many people were also injured in the attack, stated that some of the injured are in serious condition, and therefore the death toll could rise further. The police reported that the number of suspects taken into custody has increased to 3, and that 2 of them were individuals trying to flee the scene in a luxury vehicle. It was reported that one of the suspects is the attacker, while the other 2 are close associates of the attacker.
"THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT IS A FAMILY TRAGEDY"
According to a statement made by a police spokesperson from the Lüneburg Police Department, the attack most likely occurred due to a family dispute related to the youth center. The spokesperson said, "The incident is not related to femicide or a political motive; the reason for the violent act is an extended family tragedy centered on the youth care facility."
According to a report in BBC Turkish, it was stated that the 45-year-old suspect of Turkish origin, who was taken into custody, carried out the attack due to a child custody dispute.
Police official Kathrin Schuol said about the suspect, "I can confirm that he is a 45-year-old male of Turkish origin, born in Germany and residing in the Hanover region."
