The "Workshop on the Compliance of Regional Court of Appeals Decisions with Supreme Court Jurisprudence" on the topic of "earthquake-criminal cases," organized by the Supreme Court Presidency, has begun in Izmir. In his opening speech at the workshop held at a hotel in the city, Supreme Court President Ömer Kerkez stated that great suffering and many grievances have been experienced due to the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023.
"EACH OF THE SUFFERINGS IS A CASE FILE IN FRONT OF THE JUDICIARY"
Expressing that each of the sufferings has come before the judiciary as a case file, Kerkez said, "It is important that these files are completed and concluded in a healthy and fair manner as soon as possible, as this will somewhat alleviate all this suffering. This is an important issue. As members of the judiciary, we owe this to our citizens in a way, and it is our duty." Kerkez stated that their aim in the workshop is to contribute to the healthy resolution of cases in the earthquake-affected region by bringing together first-instance courts, regional courts of appeals, and the Supreme Court.
THE WORKSHOP WILL END ON FEBRUARY 15
Kerkez explained that they wanted to convey the Supreme Court's practices, opinions, and thoughts regarding earthquake cases face-to-face to the participants at the workshop, and continued: "The main slogan of this workshop is actually this: the same decision for the same events. The content, characteristics, and conditions of the event are almost the same, and only the parties are different, so the same decisions should be made starting from the first instance in these files. Those who commit the same crime should receive the same punishment. Ensuring this consistency is also a very important issue for establishing trust in the judiciary." After the opening speech, members of the Supreme Court's 12th Criminal Chamber, Mehmet Yılmaz and Kürşat Hamurcu, made presentations. The workshop will conclude on February 15.
