Meteorology engineer Adil Tek said, "Summer temperatures will occasionally rise a few degrees above seasonal norms in some regions. We will mostly see the heat as an extension of summer. That is, in September and October, we will say, 'This summer isn't over yet,' it seems. Summer will extend."

Meteorology engineer Adil Tek made assessments regarding the hot weather across Turkey. Tek stated that the heatwave, which negatively affects life along the line extending from Portugal to Germany and breaks records even in cities known for their cool climates like Paris, is caused by a weather pattern called the 'Omega block.' Speaking about the 'Omega block' affecting Europe, Tek also evaluated its indirect effects on Turkey.

"THERE IS A WIND BLOWING FROM THE NORTHEAST ALONG THE BOSPHORUS CORRIDOR IN ISTANBUL"

Tek said, "In Istanbul, there is currently a wind blowing from the northeast, especially along the Bosphorus corridor. Its intensity sometimes reaches up to 20 kilometers per hour. It particularly relieves Istanbulites in the Bosphorus corridor. Temperatures locally rise up to 30 degrees Celsius in southern districts. Which are these? We see temperatures rising up to 30 degrees in districts like Tuzla, Kartal, Bakırköy, Beylikdüzü, and Büyükçekmece. We had this in previous days, and we will see the same values today. But overall, when we look at Istanbul, temperatures are around 27-28 degrees Celsius except in these districts. Night temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius. Of course, this is a summer day. When it locally exceeds 30 degrees, we also call it a 'tropical day,' but in terms of those temperature values, tropical days have not fully been experienced in Istanbul yet. At night, Istanbulites sleep a bit more comfortably. These temperatures are slightly more normal and below normal for this season, compared to recent years; last year we were exposed to hot weather waves for a very long time across the country and in Istanbul. We had about 4, 5-6 heatwaves, some lasting about a week to 10 days. But this year, we have not yet seen those heatwaves, and it does not seem that we will be exposed to very high heatwaves in the coming months either. We will still see heatwaves from time to time, but not as much as last year, especially the country's record temperature of 50 degrees Celsius broken in Şırnak, it does not seem we will reach those values. For Istanbul, the highest possible values are 35-36 degrees Celsius, and these are not long-lasting. The general picture in Istanbul is like this."

Summer This Year Seems Endless

"COOL AIR SEEPING FROM RUSSIA AND THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CREATE PRECIPITATION"

Tek said, "Across the country, there are ongoing rains in the central and eastern parts of the country, especially forming in the afternoon hours. Of course, the reason for these rains is that, due to the effect of the high pressure settled over Europe, we have a trough formed by somewhat cool air seeping from Russia and a low pressure system, which creates those rains. While our regions remain cool, with values around or below averages, Europe continues to be under the influence of a heatwave reaching quite high values, unprecedented and rarely encountered, such a heatwave had formed in early June. But although there was some relief afterward, the ongoing high pressure over the past days, that is, along the ridge of the Azores high pressure over Africa extending towards Europe, and with its further development in Europe, those strong hot air values have now formed. Where are these? Especially along the line extending through Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany, we are seeing high temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius these days; Europe is already on alert due to these temperatures. These temperatures will continue in the coming days. That is, there is a heatwave lasting until the 28th-29th of the month. It will gradually shift towards Central Europe. So, rather than the countries we just listed, we will start to see the effects of that high pressure in regions extending to Austria, Hungary, Poland, and of course we can include Italy and even Romania."

"FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH, WE WILL ESPECIALLY SEE HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THRACE AND THE AEGEAN"

Tek said, "As of the beginning of July, the structure created by this high pressure, which we call the 'Omega block,' will start to shift more towards the central and eastern parts of Europe. The western regions of our country remain in the coastal part of this. From the beginning of that month, we will see high temperatures especially in Thrace and the Aegean. Which areas in the Aegean are more affected? Izmir, Manisa, Aydın. Currently, temperature values there are already at 35-36 degrees, but that is due to its own effect, not the European effect. However, from the beginning of the month, these temperatures will cause the temperatures in the Aegean to rise up to approximately 40 degrees Celsius, and in Thrace, Edirne, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, and Çanakkale are among our provinces that can reach these temperature values."

Summer This Year Seems Endless

"VALUES IN SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA ARE ITS NORMAL AVERAGE VALUES"

Adil Tek said, "Of course, meanwhile, in Southeastern Anatolia, those are now its normal average values; we see 37-38 degrees there. Which areas? Provinces like Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Şırnak see these values. Those values will continue in the coming days anyway. When we look at the overall July and August, compared to last year and previous years, actually, this year, such an extremely hot summer is not expected for us."

"IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, WE WILL SAY THIS SUMMER IS NOT OVER YET"

Tek said, "Summer temperatures will generally be at seasonal norms and occasionally a few degrees above seasonal norms in some places. Of course, the overall averages of the provinces we just mentioned are slightly above normal compared to other provinces in terms of temperature. We will see more heat in the form of extended summer. That is, in September and October, we will say 'This summer is not over yet,' it seems that way. The outputs of our current climate models show us these results. Even if we evaluate on a weekly basis, in the first week of July, temperatures in the western regions appear to be a few degrees above seasonal norms. In the following days, that is, in the continuing days of July, temperatures in the west especially seem to be a few degrees higher. The summer will not end; the summer will be prolonged."

"IT PREVENTS THE FORMATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURES IN OUR COUNTRY"

Tek finally said, "In Europe, temperatures of 40 degrees, for example, Paris is not a place that easily or frequently sees 40 degrees. Italy sees it, but seeing it in Paris is a very high situation. That is, it is not a very common value. The current position of the Omega block prevents the formation of high temperatures in our country."
