Turkey mourned the five siblings who tragically lost their lives due to the overturning of an electric heater in the Selçuk district of İzmir. Following investigations, a fire report was released detailing the cause of the fire.

The fire in which 5 siblings lost their lives in the Selçuk district of İzmir has been reported by the fire department. The report stated that it was concluded that the electric heater, which was plugged into an extension cord, tipped over and ignited the carpet and then the laminate flooring.

Melisa Akcan, who lives in a single-story house in the Cumhuriyet Neighborhood Tavşantepe area, has a husband, Hakan Akcan, who is in prison for a crime, and she supports her family by collecting scrap. On November 11, around 19:00, she left her 5 children at home and went to collect scrap. A fire broke out after the heater in the house tipped over. As the flames quickly engulfed the house, the siblings Aras Bulut Akcan (1), Masal Işık Akcan (2), Aslan Miraç Akcan (3), Funda Peri Akcan (4), and Fadime Nefes Akcan (5) were trapped inside. Upon neighbors' notification to the 112 Emergency Call Center, fire, police, and medical teams were dispatched to the address. The fire was extinguished by the responding fire crews.

"THEY WERE BURIED SIDE BY SIDE"

It was determined that 3 of the 5 children removed from the house died from poisoning. The 2 injured children could not be saved despite all the efforts of the doctors at the hospital they were taken to. The initial investigation into the fire revealed that the door was locked. Melisa Akcan, who suffered a nervous breakdown due to the pain of losing her children and was treated at the hospital, was taken to the police station for her statement after being discharged. Melisa Akcan, who was referred to the courthouse, was released under judicial control. The funerals of the 5 siblings were buried side by side the next day at Acarlar Cemetery.

A report prepared by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department's Fire and Emergency Response Branch has emerged regarding the fire. The report stated that the electric heater, which was plugged into an extension cord and was operational, tipped over for some reason and ignited the carpet on the floor. It was noted that the fire may have started as the flames spread from there to the laminate flooring.

The report also mentioned that the fire crews left at 19:14 and arrived at the fire scene 3 minutes later, where it was observed that the house was burning with flames and smoke.
