The peace talks aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war are being set up again in Istanbul. In a statement from the Kremlin Palace, it was said, "The Russian delegation is ready to meet with Ukraine in Istanbul on Monday, June 2. If the talks yield results, Putin will attend the summit." Foreign Minister Fidan also mentioned that the leaders could come together in Istanbul.
Discussions continue regarding where the new 'peace table' will be set up in the peace negotiations initiated to end the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine, while statements have come from both Russia and Ukraine.
ISTANBUL WAS REQUESTED
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitriy Peskov stated, "The next meeting could be in Istanbul. We would prefer the country that hosted the first round," while Ukrainian President Zelensky also pointed to Turkey for the negotiations.
THEY WILL COME ON JUNE 2
The Kremlin made a new statement saying that they have not yet received a response from Ukraine regarding the proposal to hold the new round of negotiations on June 2 in Istanbul. The Kremlin announced that the Russian delegation will come to Istanbul on June 2.
MINISTER FIDAN: LEADERS CAN MEET IN ISTANBUL
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met today with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in the capital as part of his visit to Ukraine. After their one-on-one meeting, Fidan made a statement.
Stating that "we are approaching a critical crossroads in the war," Minister Fidan said, "As I pointed out in the negotiations held in Istanbul on May 16, we have two paths ahead of us. Either we will turn a blind eye to this war, or we will achieve a lasting peace within this year." Fidan emphasized that they have proven that negotiations can yield concrete results, referring to the Russia-Ukraine talks held in Istanbul, and said, "We want the momentum gained in Istanbul to continue."
Foreign Minister Fidan stated, "The meetings held in Istanbul have added a new dimension to the search for a diplomatic solution. Expectations for a ceasefire and peace have increased. We consider the Istanbul talks as a new beginning."
"THE ONLY WAY IS LASTING PEACE"
Emphasizing that there is full support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence, Fidan expressed, "We believe it is possible to hold the next round," reiterating that Turkey is ready to host the subsequent talks.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that Russia wants to continue the talks on Monday, June 2, stating, "We are focusing on ending the destruction and humanitarian tragedy caused by the war, rather than where the negotiations are held. We believe it is possible to hold the next round based on the principles agreed upon by the parties in Istanbul. Therefore, I want to express that we are ready for the subsequent talks."
Foreign Minister Fidan remarked, "We believe it may be possible to crown the meetings held in Istanbul with the gathering of Trump, Putin, and Zelensky under the auspices of Mr. Erdoğan." Fidan emphasized that "the only way to lasting peace" is crucial.
"WE OFFERED TO MEET"
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced in a written statement yesterday that they proposed to hold the new round of negotiations with Ukraine on June 2 in Istanbul.
Responding to a question about the steps Russia would take if Ukraine "breaks" the new round of negotiations, Peskov used the following expressions: "We proposed to meet on June 2, Monday, in Istanbul for the second round. We need to wait for a response from Ukraine and adjust ourselves accordingly. So far, as far as I know, no response has been received from Ukraine."
