It has emerged that the United States launched an attack on Venezuela, a country with which it has long had tensions, earlier this month. In an operation organized by the CIA, it is claimed that a port facility was struck by drones, marking this attack the first known direct operation conducted by the U.S. within Venezuelan territory.
It was claimed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States carried out a drone strike on a port facility located off the coast of Venezuela earlier this month. According to sources speaking to CNN, the attack was the first known direct operation conducted by the U.S. within Venezuelan borders.
NO CASUALTIES REPORTED
It was alleged that the attack targeted a remote dock believed to be used by the Venezuela-based criminal organization Tren de Aragua for drug storage and shipment. It was stated that no one was present at the facility during the operation and that there were no casualties. The attack was reported to have targeted the facility and boats used for drug shipments.
DENIAL OF SUPPORT CLAIM BY SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND
Although it was claimed that U.S. Special Operations Forces provided intelligence support for the operation, the U.S. Special Operations Command denied this allegation. The CIA did not comment on the matter. No official statement has been made by the White House or Venezuelan authorities.
TRUMP INDIRECTLY CONFIRMED
U.S. President Donald Trump indirectly confirmed in an interview on December 26 that a "large facility" used for drug shipments was struck. In a later statement, Trump said the attack targeted the port area where drugs were loaded onto boats, but he left unanswered questions about whether the operation was carried out by the CIA or the military.
TENSIONS BETWEEN THE 2 COUNTRIES ESCALATING
The attack is believed to further escalate tensions between the U.S. and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Recently, the U.S. announced that it had struck numerous drug boats in the Caribbean and Pacific, while also imposing a blockade on oil tankers heading to Venezuela. Previously, U.S. attacks on Venezuela had been limited to boats in international waters.
Sources indicated that the attack had a symbolic nature and targeted only one of the many ports used in drug trafficking. It was noted that the operation did not create a significant immediate impact on the Venezuelan public.
