The blood-red color that covered the sky after the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela caused a huge stir both across the country and on social media. Images taken during sunset in the capital Caracas showed the sky covered in a crimson veil, leading many to associate this extraordinary sight with the recent major disaster.
The two powerful earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that occurred on June 24 caused massive destruction in northern Venezuela. In the state of La Guaira in particular, numerous buildings were leveled, and according to official statements, at least 2,300 people lost their lives. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people are still trapped under the rubble, while search and rescue teams continue their race against time.
Blood-Red Sky Sparks Concern
The intense red sunset seen in the skies of Caracas after the earthquakes quickly spread on social media. Photos, viewed millions of times in a short period, were associated by some users with apocalyptic signs mentioned in the Bible.
Some social media users, particularly referencing Joel 2:30-31, suggested that the red sky could be a divine warning. These verses speak of signs in the heavens such as fire, smoke, and blood, and the sun turning to darkness and the moon to blood.
These interpretations quickly gained widespread traction on social media, with some users arguing that the event was not an ordinary natural phenomenon.
Scientific Explanation from Experts
However, meteorology and atmospheric experts stated that the images observed were entirely due to natural causes.
According to experts, during an atmospheric event called "Candilazo," sunlight interacts with dense dust particles in the atmosphere, causing the sky to take on deep shades of red and orange.
It was also noted that dense dust clouds carried from the Sahara Desert to the Caribbean and northern South America during this period played a significant role in this effect. Experts emphasized that this color change seen during sunrise and sunset is a result of natural phenomena and has no direct connection to the earthquake.
Search and Rescue Efforts Continue
Meanwhile, search and rescue operations are ongoing at full speed following the earthquake disaster in the country.
It has been reported that the United Nations has sent thousands of body bags to the region due to the rising death toll, while teams are making intense efforts to find signs of life under the rubble.
In recent days, the discovery of former Florida beauty queen Skarlent Rodríguez and her boyfriend lying side by side in the rubble has caused great sorrow in the country. Their families stated in a statement that the couple was together until the very end, expressing that their pain was indescribable.
Miraculous Rescue Brings Hope
Despite all the tragic developments, there is also heartening news from the country.
Three-year-old Klieber Moran, rescued alive from the rubble six days after the earthquake, has become a symbol of the disaster. Health teams reported that the child, who was taken to the hospital, is in good condition.
Venezuela's Interim President Delcy Rodríguez shared images of the rescue moments on her social media account, stating that the child's survival is a source of hope for the entire country.
Experts emphasize that in the wake of the tragedy, citizens should only trust statements made by official institutions and scientists, rather than conspiracy theories spreading on social media. It is noted that although the red sky images have caused concern for many, according to scientific data, this is a natural meteorological event resulting from atmospheric conditions and dense dust clouds carried from the Sahara.
