With the regulation published in the Official Gazette, citizens who are prescribed both distance and near glasses will be able to receive their multifocal glasses for free starting from Monday, December 15. The entire cost will be covered by SGK (Social Security Institution).

The Social Security Institution (SGK) has implemented the regulation that millions of glasses users have been waiting for a long time. With the "Regulation on the Amendment of the Health Implementation Communiqué of the Social Security Institution" published in the Official Gazette dated December 10, 2025, an important change regarding the use of multifocal glasses has come into effect.

STARTING FROM MONDAY

Within the scope of the regulation, patients who are prescribed glasses for both distance and near vision problems will have the right to use multifocal glasses as of Monday, December 15, if they wish. In the new application, the cost of the glasses will be fully covered by SGK.

The support for multifocal glasses, which has been demanded by users from the social security system for years, has thus been formalized. SGK's decision will provide significant convenience, especially for citizens who have to use multiple glasses due to age-related vision problems.

The articles included in the communiqué regarding the amendment are as follows:

ARTICLE 2- The following paragraph has been added to Article 3.3.3.A of the same communiqué.

"(7) If the patient is prescribed two pairs of glasses for distance and near vision by specialist physicians in eye health and diseases, as well as assistant physicians specializing in this field, the cost of multifocal glasses will be covered by the institution based on the patient's preference without the need for a separate prescription. However, in cases where the use of distance and near glasses is necessary for patients aged 18 and under, it is mandatory to provide glasses as prescribed by the physician."
