The incident that occurred in Johor, Malaysia, the day before yesterday made headlines across the country. After a dispute with his wife, a man, overwhelmed by anger, set fire to a vehicle containing passengers in the middle of the road.
The incident took place on Monday, February 3, around 10:20 PM in the Jalan Tebrau area. Footage recorded by eyewitnesses on their mobile phones captured moments of the angry husband pouring gasoline on the car and then setting it on fire. Three women and one man who were passengers in the vehicle managed to escape just in time before the flames spread.
Raub Selamat, Deputy Chief of Police for Johor Bahru Selatan, stated, "We have launched an investigation into the incident. Our efforts to capture the 25-year-old suspect are ongoing. The suspect fled in a Toyota Vellfire after setting his wife's vehicle on fire."
It was reported that the victimized woman suffered a financial loss of approximately 90,000 Malaysian Ringgit (27,400 Singapore Dollars) due to the completely burned vehicle. Footage taken near Columbia Asia Hospital showed the burned vehicle being pulled to the roadside and rescue teams working at the scene.
The images shared on social media drew significant backlash. Users pointed out that the incident occurring on a busy road could have led to a major disaster. The fact that the fire did not spread to other vehicles and that the passengers were able to escape in time was considered a great stroke of luck.
The police have increased security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring and have launched a large-scale search operation to capture the suspect.
