After the police officer Melih Okan Keskin was beaten and subsequently lost his life while going to the vehicle inspection station in Ankara, the suspects S.A. and M.Y., who were referred to the magistrate's court, were arrested. The suspect S.A. stated, "As I was getting out of the vehicle, the person cursed at me, saying, 'Are you going to crush me?' Thinking that the person would attack me, I threw a punch," while M.Y. said, "I learned from you officials that the person had died. On the day of the incident, I did not do anything to harm or kill him."
Police officer Melih Okan Keskin (44), who was on duty in Ankara, was assaulted as a result of a dispute with the staff at the station where he took his vehicle for inspection. Keskin, who suffered a brain hemorrhage, passed away at the hospital to which he was taken.
2 SUSPECTS ARRESTED
As part of the investigation initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, suspects S.A., M.Y., and Y.K. were taken into custody and brought to the Ankara Courthouse after their procedures at the police station. While suspects S.A. and M.Y. were arrested by the magistrate court, Y.K. was released under judicial control measures.
"I THOUGHT THE PERSON WOULD ATTACK ME"
The suspect S.A., whose statement at the magistrate court was revealed, said, "After the argument broke out, I honked the horn 2-3 times while pulling the car out. As I was getting out of the vehicle, the person yelled at me, 'Are you going to run me over?' and cursed at me. Thinking that the person would attack me, I threw a punch."
"RUN, THEY'RE GOING TO KILL A MAN"
Suspect M.Y. stated, "I have been working as an inspection technician at the vehicle inspection station for 8 years. That day, I started my shift around 08:30. On the day of the incident, while my shift was ongoing, I heard shouting from outside the garden and inside the vehicle inspection station at an hour I cannot remember, close to the end of the evening shift. I heard shouts like 'Run, they're going to kill a man,' and 'They're attacking a woman.'
"I DID NOT DO ANYTHING TO HARM"
M.Y., who claimed to have heard cursing, stated, "I do not know this person; I saw him for the first time. My colleagues walked towards the man who was cursing. At that moment, I approached the man at an average speed, neither walking nor running, from the right side of my friends and from the left side of the man, and I pushed him. After pushing, I cannot estimate how many of my friends were there; we were crowded. In the excitement of the incident, I do not remember who fought with whom or who pushed whom. I have never seen or known the deceased Melih Okan Keskin. I learned from you officers that the person died. On the day of the incident, I did not do anything to harm or kill him; I do not know why he died. I definitely did not assault Melih Okan Keskin," he stated.
"I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT"
Suspect Y.K. claimed that there was a dispute on the day of the incident and that there were insults, but he stated that he was not involved in the incident at all.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The incident occurred on February 2 at the vehicle inspection station in the Yenimahalle district of Ankara. According to the information obtained, police officer Melih Okan Keskin was told that he could not pass the inspection because the parking light of his vehicle was not working. Keskin, who checked his car, stated that he did not encounter such a malfunction. A dispute broke out between Keskin and the staff, who stated that they could not take the vehicle for inspection again.
Keskin, who was assaulted by a group, went to the hospital on his own accord after feeling unwell. After the first examination, it was determined that Keskin had a shift and bleeding in his brain, and he was transferred to another hospital. After the surgery, Keskin, who became unwell again, passed away on February 5 despite all interventions.
As part of the investigation initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident, suspects S.A., M.Y., and Y.K. were taken into custody and brought to the Ankara Courthouse after their procedures at the police station.
