The work stoppage initiated 8 days ago by workers at the Buca Municipality in Izmir, due to irregular salary payments, continues. The workers' protest has disrupted cleaning services. Garbage piles have formed in various parts of the district. The garbage has also spread a bad odor in the environment.
"IT'S SPREADING DISEASE" Citizens emphasized that the garbage piles not only create a bad smell but also pose a risk of disease. A citizen named Mehmet Karasu stated, "If they can't receive their salaries, they are right, but this situation affects people's health, especially children and the elderly. We have gotten used to the smell, but getting used to it is not enough. This situation is spreading disease," he said.
"WE ARE THE ONES SUFFERING THE MOST" Kenan Ekin stated, "For a week, the front of my shop has been filled with garbage like this. Flies, the smell, we are the ones suffering from all the troubles here. This situation has caused a decline in my business; customers do not want to enter or pass through the door. The municipality needs to think of a solution. Every election, a lot of people are hired by the municipality, but when salaries are not paid, the problem becomes garbage," he said.
WHAT HAPPENED? A total of 1,763 workers employed at the Buca Municipality had initiated a work stoppage on June 18, claiming they were not receiving their salaries regularly.
