The Syrian Ministry of Defense did not allow the Russian convoy, which departed from Hmeimim Air Base in the Jableh district of Latakia province, to enter the base in Tartus province.
30-VEHICLE CONVOY WAITED FOR 8 HOURS
The Russian convoy, consisting of 30 vehicles carrying rockets, set off in the morning from Hmeimim Air Base towards Tartus. The Russian convoy was held for about 8 hours at the road checkpoint at the entrance to Tartus by military forces affiliated with the new government's Ministry of Defense.
RETURNED TO THE BASE
After hours of waiting, the convoy returned to the Hmeimim base in the Jableh district around 5:00 PM local time without entering the city. This development is seen as an indication of the tension in the military and political balances in Syria.
UNDER RUSSIAN CONTROL SINCE 2015
After the operation initiated by the opposition on December 27, 2024, Russia had pulled its military presence in the Syrian provinces back to Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia. The Russian army began using the base in accordance with an agreement reached with the ousted Assad regime in August 2015 and started to expand the base a year later.
