The U.S. accused Iran and Russia of trying to interfere in the 2024 U.S. elections. The U.S. Treasury Department added an organization linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU) to its sanctions list.
SANCTIONS ON TWO INSTITUTIONS
The Department sanctioned the "Cognitive Design Production Center" affiliated with the IRGC and the Moscow-based "Geopolitical Expertise Center" linked to the GRU, along with the center's head, Valery Korovin. The Department claimed that these organizations aimed to "fuel socio-political tensions and influence U.S. voters during the 2024 elections."
"WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE VIGILANT AGAINST ENEMIES"
Bradley Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Treasury Department, stated, "The governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our electoral processes and institutions, attempting to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns. The U.S. will remain vigilant against enemies seeking to undermine our democracy."
