UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the air defense destroyer "HMS Dragon" will be deployed to the region following Iran's drone attack on the British military base Akrotiri in the Republic of Cyprus. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made a statement regarding regional security following the drone attack by Iran on the British military base Akrotiri near Limassol in the Republic of Cyprus (RoC).
A AIR DEFENSE DESTROYER WILL BE SENT TO THE REGION In a post on his social media account, Starmer stated that he spoke with RoC leader Nikos Christodoulides and noted that the "HMS Dragon," a Type 45 class air defense destroyer belonging to the UK, will be deployed to the region. Emphasizing that the safety of British military personnel on the island of Cyprus is a priority, Starmer said, "We are continuing our defense operations. I informed the Greek Cypriot leader that we will deploy HMS Dragon warship along with helicopters capable of intercepting drones to the region. We will always act in accordance with the interests of the UK and our allies."
HMS Dragon DRONE ATTACK IN AKROTIRI The spokesperson for the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, Konstantinos Letimbiotis, stated that the drone that fell in the base area on the night between Sunday and Monday caused limited damage, and that authorities immediately activated security protocols. Letimbiotis mentioned that after the incident, the Greek Cypriot authorities have been in constant coordination with the UK government and the management of British bases.
Officials at the British base in Akrotiri also called on local residents to "stay in a safe place until further notice." It was stated that the security level has been raised to the highest level to protect base personnel.
