It has been claimed that following U.S. President Donald Trump's visit, the United Kingdom has decided to officially recognize the state of Palestine. The British newspaper The Times reported that the decision will be announced this weekend. Prime Minister Starmer had warned that he would take action if Israel does not take steps to alleviate the suffering in Gaza and does not reach a ceasefire in the ongoing war with Hamas, which has lasted for nearly two years.
According to a report by Reuters citing the Times, the UK government is expected to officially recognize the state of Palestine this weekend. The announcement is anticipated to come after the conclusion of US President Donald Trump's official visit.
PRIME MINISTER STARMER HAD SIGNALLED
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated in July that action would be taken if Israel did not take concrete steps to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and was unwilling to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing war with Hamas.
UK SUPPORTS "TWO-STATE SOLUTION" PRINCIPLE
Israel argues that a similar move by France, Canada, and Australia would reward Hamas. However, the UK has long supported the principle of a "two-state solution." London, which previously emphasized the need to wait for the right time, is now preparing to take action with a concrete timeline.
There is also increasing pressure within the Labour Party for a tougher stance against Israel. Starmer had mentioned that they might recognize the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly next week.
TRUMP: I WOULD NOT BE DISTURBED BY SUCH A DECISION
While the UK Foreign Office has not commented on the matter, Trump, who made his second official visit to London in July, stated that he would not be disturbed by the UK making such a decision. However, the US administration has clearly opposed its European allies taking steps in this direction since that time.
