In Siirt, the suspects arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Gülhan Börülce (39), a mother of two, in her home, were brought before the judge. The defendants, upper neighbors Şükrü (33) and his wife Fatma Kaya (30), appeared in court. In the hearing, Şükrü Kaya said, 'My aim was to threaten her and take her gold. On the day of the incident, I knocked on the door under the pretext of leaving my bag and drinking water. After drinking water, a struggle ensued. I was taking photos of her door to determine when she was alone. I was checking whose shoes were in the house. During the incident, I made the decision to kill.'

The incident occurred on December 18, 2025. In the Barış neighborhood, relatives of Gülhan Börülce, who could not be reached, reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Following the report, health and police teams were dispatched to the address. Teams entering the home determined that Börülce had been stabbed to death. After autopsy procedures, Gülhan Börülce's body was taken to Ankara and buried.

MURDERER NEIGHBOR REVEALED

As part of the investigation conducted by the Siirt Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, upper neighbors Şükrü Kaya and his wife Fatma Kaya were detained. In his statement to the police, Şükrü Kaya confessed that he had been gambling illegally, lost a large amount of money, and had been planning for some time to kill Gülhan Börülce and take the bracelets from her wrist. His wife Fatma Kaya did not accept the accusations against her. After their procedures, the couple was referred to the courthouse and arrested by the court, then sent to prison.

Meanwhile, moments when Şükrü Kaya exchanged the stolen gold at a jeweler were captured on security camera. The footage includes scenes of Kaya handing the stolen bracelets to the jeweler, then checking the money received in his account number, signing the sales document, and subsequently leaving the premises.

AGGRAVATED LIFE IMPRISONMENT SOUGHT

The indictment prepared against the arrested defendants, the couple Şükrü and Fatma Kaya, was accepted by the Siirt 1st Heavy Penal Court. In the indictment, aggravated life imprisonment and prison sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years were sought for the arrested defendants Şükrü and his wife Fatma Kaya on charges of 'Premeditated, monstrously motivated intentional killing of a woman' and 'Aggravated robbery.' Additionally, for Fatma Kaya, a prison sentence of 6 months to 5 years was requested for the crime of 'Destroying, concealing, or altering evidence of a crime.' The indictment also stated that a separate decision of no need for prosecution was made regarding 4 suspects on the charge of 'Intentional killing.'

'I MADE THE DECISION TO KILL DURING THE INCIDENT'

At the first hearing of the case held at the Siirt 1st Heavy Penal Court, Gülhan Börülce's husband, brother, and relatives, as well as the arrested defendants and their lawyers, attended. In his statement during the hearing, Şükrü Kaya stated that he had gambling debts and had planned to take the bracelets from Gülhan Börülce's wrist, saying, 'I got drawn into gambling since 2022. I constantly experienced financial difficulties and family problems. Because of this, I had debts, and I was hiding these debts from my wife. My aim was to threaten her and take her gold.'

Regarding the moment of the incident, Şükrü Kaya stated, 'On the day of the incident, I knocked on the door under the pretext of leaving my bag and drinking water. After drinking water, a struggle occurred. I had previously visited their home with my wife. After the struggle, I killed her with a knife I picked up and then removed the bracelets from her wrist. I had started thinking about taking her gold about a month before the incident, but I had no intention to kill. My wife had no knowledge of this situation; at that time, she was at our own home. I was taking photos of the door to determine when Gülhan Börülce was alone. I was checking whose shoes were in the house. I was taking photos of her door to determine when she was alone. During the incident, I made the decision to kill.'

'IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THE INCIDENT, I WOULD HAVE REPORTED MY HUSBAND'

Şükrü Kaya's wife, the arrested Fatma Kaya, stated that she had no knowledge of the incident and that when health teams arrived at the scene, they said Gülhan Börülce had been dead for at least 3 hours, adding, 'I do not accept the accusations. I woke up at 10:00 that day. I never saw my husband off when he went to work. That day, after making my child's food, Gülhan Börülce's daughter knocked on my door around noon, saying they couldn't get into the house. Then, I took her daughter and my own child and went down to the lower floor. I called my husband and told him about the situation. I tried to reach Gülhan Abla by calling her; her phone was ringing from inside. She was using antidepressant medication, so I thought she had fainted. After the neighbor and the electrician who came to the scene broke the door and entered, I also went inside. She was lying on the floor in the living room with a knife in her abdomen. I am not a cold-blooded person; I had my baby in my arms. I shouted, 'Gülhan Abla has committed suicide.' Then, Şükrü Kaya, who arrived at the scene, tried to calm me down. Şükrü checked Gülhan Abla's pulse as she lay on the floor. At that moment, I called Gülhan Abla's husband, who was serving in Northern Iraq, and told him she was injured. When health teams arrived at the scene, they said she had been dead for at least 3 hours. Until that moment, I thought she was injured. I fainted when the body was being removed from the house; they took me to the hospital. As a woman, I would never get involved in a femicide. As a mother, how could I leave a child motherless? We had visited them the evening before the incident; other neighbors had also come. It is normal for my DNA to be found on a glass. Someone might have given me water during the incident because I fainted; I don't remember that moment. I did not enter the kitchen on the day of the incident. If I had known about the incident, I would have reported my husband. We have been family friends since 2022. We used to go kiss their hands on holidays. I am not guilty.'

Gülhan Börülce's husband and lawyers addressed the court, requesting that Şükrü and Fatma Kaya be given the maximum sentence. The court panel decided to send the prepared DNA reports to the Forensic Medicine Institute for determination and to continue the defendants' detention, adjourning the hearing to May 12.
