The story of a mother who attempted to kill herself and her two children after discovering her husband's infidelity and being abandoned has emerged in a court case.

The mother took her two children to bed and ingested a mixture of strong medications. It was reported that they took painkillers, as well as antidepressants and sleeping pills.

The 39-year-old woman, whose name has not been disclosed for legal reasons, left a suicide message for her brother, who immediately alerted the authorities.

Police, health teams, and firefighters rushed to their home in Uckfield, East Sussex. The teams found the 10-year-old boy unconscious in bed, covered in vomit, with his eyes open. Health officials found his 13-year-old sister wandering around in a "dazed and confused" state.

The mother was conscious but her speech was unclear. All three were urgently taken to the hospital. Yesterday, the 39-year-old woman began to be tried for attempted murder.

In Lewes Crown Court, it was learned that the woman fell into depression after revealing her husband's affair with another person. Her husband had left the family home in Uckfield at the beginning of this year and moved abroad with his girlfriend.

The jury learned that on February 7, the woman collected the medications at home and discussed her plan with her children during dinner.

Prosecutor Amy Packham stated: "She told the police that she had decided she could not live without her husband and therefore decided to commit suicide. She realized she could not physically kill her children and decided that they should all take the medication to die together."

After treatment in the hospital, the children were questioned by a police officer. The boy said the reason he was in the hospital was because he had taken medication. His sister told the police that they had taken a lot of pills and that they had taken them to die. When asked where they got the pills, she said, "from my mom."

In court, it was heard that when the mother was arrested for attempting to kill her two children, she said, "I didn't force them." The defendant was found to be suffering from moderate to severe depression.

Prosecutor Packham told the jury: "You will hear psychiatric evidence regarding whether she was in a state to form the intent to kill her children at that time."

The trial is ongoing.
