An interesting incident occurred on April 30 on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard in the central Yenişehir district of Mersin. Durukan Işık, a 25-year-old man, was stopped by police patrols while he was going to the market on his horse late at night.
10,263 LIRA FINE IMPOSED
During the checks, it was determined that Işık had a blood alcohol level of 2.46 promille, and he was fined 9,270 TL for 'driving under the influence' and 993 TL for 'keeping animals on highways outside of residential areas except in emergencies.'
"WHEN I HEARD THE HORN, MY HORSE STARTED TO RUN"
Işık, who stated that he was riding to the market on his horse, said, "The police wanted to stop me on the road. When they honked from behind, my horse started to speed up. At that moment, I was listening to music with headphones, and I didn't hear the horn. When they honked, my horse started to run, and I tried to stop it. When they turned on the siren, the horse started to run even faster. Because this is a racehorse, not an ordinary horse. So they chased me, thinking I was escaping. Later, when the police turned on their lights, I started to stop the horse. At that moment, the horse slipped, and I fell off," he said.
"I WAS NOT IN A VEHICLE, I WAS ON A HORSE"
Işık, who said he would appeal the fine, stated, "The horse has no legal status; there is no such penalty. The model of the vehicle is not written on the penalty receipt, nor is the license plate. Okay, it says 9,270 lira fine for alcohol, if this is a vehicle, then why is there no fine for driving without a license? I don't have a license. I'm not in a vehicle; I'm on a horse. They made me blow into the breathalyzer, and when alcohol showed up on the promille meter, they forcibly put me in the car. They took me to the police station, and I gave a statement. They kept my horse tied in front of the police station until I gave my statement. I will make the necessary appeals with my lawyer, and we will file the necessary complaints. We will not let this matter go," he said.
