The words of Sırrı Süreyya Önder, the DEM Party Istanbul MP who passed away due to multiple organ failure at the hospital where he was being treated, have resurfaced: "To anyone I may have wronged, I forgive you. Prisons are also part of the homeland. It’s not very important. What matters is ensuring the brotherhood and common future of this country."

After fighting for his life in the hospital for 18 days, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, the Istanbul Deputy of the DEM Party and the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, passed away in the hospital where he was receiving treatment.

After suffering a severe heart condition on April 15, Sırrı Süreyya Önder was taken into surgery at a private hospital in Istanbul and had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit for days.

CAUSE OF DEATH: MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE

The hospital announced that the cause of Önder's death was multiple organ failure. In the statement made by the hospital, it was noted: "Mr. Sırrı Süreyya ÖNDER was brought to our hospital by ambulance in a state of unconsciousness, with respiratory and cardiac arrest at 22:41 on April 15, 2025. He was urgently diagnosed with 'Aortic Dissection' and underwent a Bentall operation (aortic valve replacement and ascending aorta replacement) and single vessel bypass surgery. After the surgery, the hemodynamic stability of our patient was ensured under ECMO (Heart support device) and intensive medical treatment in our intensive care unit.

The patient's neurological condition worsened as his life-threatening situation increasingly escalated, leading to multiple organ failure. Mr. Sırrı Süreyya Önder passed away due to multiple organ failure on April 3 at 16:10, on the 18th day of his follow-up and treatment in our intensive care unit. Our condolences go out to his family and all his loved ones," it was stated.

WORDS OF FORGIVENESS BACK IN THE AGENDA

Following Önder's death, his loved ones were plunged into mourning; the words he uttered while presiding over the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey came back into the spotlight.

"What is forgiveness? As for me, whoever's rights have been violated, may it be forgiven. I cannot have a personal grievance," Önder said, "Whoever's rights I have violated, may it be forgiven. Prisons are also part of the country. It's not very important. What matters is to ensure the brotherhood and common future of this country. Otherwise, we are people who have become prisoners of the prison. One day a deputy speaker, one day a convict, one day a patient. These are nothing. I am a very fragile man when it comes to the issue of forgiveness. I wish we could all look ahead together," he had expressed.
