17-year-old champion weightlifter Yashtika Acharya from India died under a 270-kilogram weight bar that fell on her neck in the gym.
The talented athlete from Rajasthan in western India, who won a gold medal at the National Youth Games, tragically lost her life in an accident on Tuesday.
Disturbing footage of the incident captured the tragedy that occurred during the young athlete's usual training routine. The images were not released due to their distressing nature.
The young athlete was attempting to perform a squat while holding a barbell weighing nearly 300 kilograms on her shoulders.
Equipped with safety gear, Yashtika took her position while her coach waited behind for support, surrounded by a group of spectators.
This was her second attempt at a weight she had successfully lifted before.
Her coach counted down, and the young athlete strained to hold the bar.
However, as the weight shifted from the rack to her shoulders, Yashtika stumbled backward.
The immense weight was more than her body could bear, and her legs gave way.
She fell backward, and despite her coach's best efforts, he could not hold the weight of the bar.
Other young women standing nearby also tried to help, but the bar was too heavy.
As Yashtika fell onto her back, the bar struck her head, causing her to break her neck as she pushed her head forward.
When her coach stumbled backward, the young athlete lay motionless.
She was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, she could not be saved.
It was reported that those who witnessed the disaster in the gym were in shock.
Naya Shahar Police Station Officer (SHO) Vikram Tiwari officially recorded the cause of the young athlete's death as a severe neck injury.
After the autopsy, her body was handed over to her family.
In a statement, the SHO said: "Yashtika was lifting weights under the supervision of her coach at the Power Headquarters gym. During the attempt, she suddenly lost her balance, and the bar fell on her neck. Gym members immediately rushed to lift the weight, and her coach attempted to perform CPR, but she showed no signs of life."
