Vali Adil Yazar Primary School, one of the educational institutions with the highest number of students in the city, stands out with its rare student profile in Turkey. The school, which has 1,742 students, including 42 siblings who are mostly identical twins, is referred to as the "twins school" due to this interesting situation.
THEY HAVE DIFFICULTY DISTINGUISHING
Due to their physical similarities, the twins, whom their friends and teachers have difficulty distinguishing, add color to the school with these features. Teachers, who sometimes confuse the twins, try to memorize their names by asking the girls to wear different hair clips, braid their hair in different styles, or by switching the twins' seats in the classroom.
“REFERRED TO AS THE 'TWINS SCHOOL'”
Provincial Director of National Education Abdulkadir Altay stated that 21 twins are being educated at Vali Adil Yazar Primary School. Thanking the school administration and teachers who strive to raise the students in the best way, Altay said:
“Our families are satisfied with the quality of the environment and education provided to our students here. We are striving to raise our children to the best point they can reach. We see that they are happy. A child learns and develops where they are happy. Having a high number of twin students in our school is not a common situation. In some schools, there can be 2, 3, or 4 twin siblings, but having 21 twins here is a beautiful coincidence. Therefore, being referred to as the 'twins school' adds a special beauty to it. The fact that our children are twins, and that this twin harmony reflects in the school makes us happy as well.”
“OUR TEACHERS HAVE TO SWITCH THE TWINS' SEATS”
School Principal Medeni Baran stated that he was appointed as the principal of the school last year. He mentioned that he received some information about this school before coming, and the feature that caught his attention the most was the number of twin students. Baran used the following expressions:
“We have 21 twin students in our school. We start the day beautifully with our students. Our morale improves when we see our twins. We feel incomplete when our twins are not in class. Our school is quite crowded. We are the largest school in Muş. We continue education with approximately 60 teachers. Our twins add color to our school. Sometimes our teachers confuse our twins, so they have to switch their seats. When I see these students, I feel like I just started my profession. We are also in constant communication with their families.”
“IT BECOMES A BEAUTIFUL JOKE AMONG STUDENTS”
Esmer Akbal, one of the teachers with twin students in her class, stated that she teaches 3rd-grade students.
She noted that she initially had difficulty distinguishing the students and said:
“They look very similar to each other. I couldn't really understand how to distinguish them. At first, I asked them to wear different hair clips. When that didn't work, I asked them to wear different cardigans. Later, I asked them to braid their hair differently. We completed our first year like that. When we reached the second year, there was still confusion. Normally, when students sit next to each other, I took one student to the front and the other to the back. I tried to understand them better. This year we are in 3rd grade. I had the opportunity to observe them by visiting their homes. Sometimes I mix up their names. I say Elif, look at Edanur, I say Edanur, look at Elif. This situation becomes a beautiful joke among the students.”
“WE SUPPORT THEM AS THEIR TEACHERS”
Teacher Fatih Şentürk also stated, “Each of our 21 twin students in our school is in different classes. Some are identical twins, some are fraternal twins. Sometimes we confuse them, and we have fun with each other. I also have a twin. I studied in the same class with my brother for years. He is currently a teacher in Düzce. The twins in our school are quite cheerful and continue their education successfully. As their teachers, we support them. Their friends are very happy and surprised when they see them.”
“OUR TEACHERS AND FRIENDS MIX UP OUR NAMES”
Parent Yakup Sayılgan said, “The names of my twin children are Asmin and Aysima. They were born on December 20, 2015. I am happy that there are so many twins in this school.”
One of the twins, Asmin Sayılgan, stated, “We help each other while studying the same lesson. When we go somewhere, some people cannot distinguish us, get confused, and cannot say our names. When we come to school, our teachers and friends also mix up our names.”
