A lawsuit has been filed against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently in custody, for the crime of "insult" due to his remarks directed at an individual, stating, "Continue your ugly politics, you are quite ugly." A prison sentence of up to 2 years and 4 months is being sought. The indictment also requests a political ban for İmamoğlu.

After his arrest, a lawsuit was filed against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his position as the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), seeking a prison sentence of up to 2 years and 4 months for the crime of "insult."

Another lawsuit was filed against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested as part of a corruption investigation against İBB. In the indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that on October 26, 2024, the complainant Serkan Şahin coincidentally saw the defendant Ekrem İmamoğlu while he was walking around the SAHA EXPO Defense, Aviation, and Space Industry Fair held in Bakırköy.

THESE WORDS BROUGHT TROUBLE FOR İMAMOĞLU

In the indictment, it was reported that while there was a distance of 3-5 meters between the complainant Şahin and the defendant İmamoğlu, the complainant said to another person, "Our soldier was martyred here while he was walking around. What will happen now? Yesterday, he hosted Zeydan in his office." At that moment, the defendant İmamoğlu heard what was said and responded to the complainant, "Calm down, we will talk when the time comes. You continue to do politics, my lion. Keep up your ugly politics; you are quite ugly." This was reported as the basis for the complaint.

In the indictment, the defendant Ekrem İmamoğlu, whose statements were included, argued that the words spoken were not of a nature to insult the complainant's honor, dignity, and reputation.

MEDIATOR ASSIGNED

İmamoğlu claimed that this was outside the bounds of politeness and was of a rude nature, asserting that the words spoken were directed at the complainant's actions, not his personality.

It was noted in the indictment that a mediator was assigned due to the defendant's actions falling under crimes subject to mediation, and it was stated that in the mediation report dated July 28, 2025, it was understood that no agreement could be reached between the complainant and the defendant.

POLITICAL BAN ALSO REQUESTED

In the indictment, a prison sentence of 3 months and 15 days to 2 years and 4 months was requested for the crime of "insult" against the defendant Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was already detained for another crime. Additionally, a political ban was requested for İmamoğlu under Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK). The indictment, sent to the Bakırköy 33rd Criminal Court of First Instance for evaluation, was accepted.
