Honda Motor has extended its decision to halt production at three factories in China for another two weeks due to issues in the supply chain caused by the global semiconductor shortage. The company announced that the restart date for the facilities under the Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) joint venture will be January 19. While industry sources indicate that the disruption may be related to delays in chip shipments, Honda did not directly confirm this association.

Honda Motor has postponed its plan to resume production at three factories in China due to disruptions in the supply chain caused by the global semiconductor shortage. Japan's second-largest automaker announced that the decision to halt production has been extended by another two weeks.

PRODUCTION WILL START ON JANUARY 19

The facilities operating under the company's joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) were expected to return to production on Monday under normal conditions. However, a statement from a Honda spokesperson indicated that the date for resuming production has been pushed back to January 19.

DELAYS IN CHIP SHIPMENTS

Industry sources suggest that the disruption may be related to delays in chip shipments from the Dutch-based subsidiary Nexperia of the Chinese technology company Wingtech. It is reported that supply issues from Nexperia have forced many automotive giants to reduce their production capacity in recent months. In its latest statement, Honda did not directly associate the production adjustment with the name Nexperia.

Honda had previously faced a similar supply issue. The company had to temporarily halt production lines at some of its factories in North America due to a chip shortage at the end of October and in November last year. The recent postponement in China indicates that Honda's vulnerability to the global parts crisis continues.
