Johnson & Johnson has been sued by over 3,000 people in the UK over claims that asbestos was found in their baby powder.
The US-based company Johnson & Johnson has been sued by more than 3,000 people in the UK over claims that asbestos found in baby powder poses a cancer risk.
LAWSUIT OVER "ASBESTOS" CLAIM IN BABY POWDER
The plaintiffs allege that the company knowingly sold talc powder contaminated with asbestos, claiming it caused cancer, and filed a lawsuit in the London High Court. According to reports in the British media, the lawsuit filed by KP Law accuses Johnson & Johnson and Kenvue UK, which separated from the company in 2023, of selling products alleged to have caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma (lung lining cancer) between 1965 and 2023.
According to the plaintiffs, Johnson & Johnson's baby powder contained carcinogenic fibers, including asbestos, and the company concealed this risk from consumers for decades. A statement from Kenvue asserted that the baby powder in question "does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer."
THE COMPANY WAS ORDERED TO PAY $966 MILLION IN DAMAGES IN THE US
Last week, the company was ordered to pay $966 million to the family of a woman who died from mesothelioma in California. This was recorded as one of the highest compensation rulings against the company. Johnson & Johnson is also facing similar lawsuits from numerous individuals in the US who claim they developed cancer after using talc-based products.
The company halted the sale of talc-based baby powder in the US in 2020 and globally in 2023, reformulating the product to a corn starch-based version.
